For the South Korean daegum player Hyelim Kim, a stable and controlled breath is indispensable for a soft, velvety sound. Ward Ginneberge lets his accordion sigh in an audiovisual work that centres on breathing. Sound artist Michele Spanghero treads the line between technology and mortality in his organ installation for pulmonary ventilators. Bertel Schollaert and the musicians of Tempvs Fvgit and Oltremontano Antwerpen rely on their own lungs. From Johann Sebastian Bach’s intimate Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit in a four-hand arrangement by György Kurtág to Felix Mendelssohn’s cheerful and virtuosic Sonata for cello and piano, whose Adagio is a subtle tribute to Bach. Maurice Ravel composed his Rapsodie espagnole in 1908. It belongs to his most refined orchestral works and exudes a subtle, stylised Spanish atmosphere. Since the piece was originally composed as piano music, it is exceptionally well suited for a four-hands performance. In particular, the enchanting Habanera and compelling Feria will continue to linger long afterwards. It gets really busy at the piano with a six-handed version of a beloved opera paraphrase from Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini and the lively Galop-Marche by Albert Lavignac. In this concert, a nocte temporis brings Telemann’s German clarity into dialogue with Rameau’s French refinement. Telemann’s Die Tageszeiten is the common thread. In four short cantatas, he represents an entire day in music, each section featuring a solo voice, a defining instrument and a concluding four-part chorus. Der Morgen (morning) exudes fresh energy with soprano and trumpet, making the first rays of sunshine almost tangible. In Der Mittag (noon), the mezzo-soprano is accompanied by a warm viola da gamba, perfect for the languid, golden midday light. Der Abend (evening) creates a sense of tranquillity with a tenor surrounded by two soft traversos. Die Nacht (night) concludes with deep bass notes, carried by the dark tones of two oboes and a bassoon – an evocation of silence, shadow and mystery. In between these segments, a nocte temporis performs scenes from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s operas. He too paints the morning, noon, evening and night, but with the theatrical grandeur of the French court. The result is a vibrant musical dialogue about light, time and the human imagination – a 24-hour journey through the Baroque era in which Telemann and Rameau complement each other with surprising naturalness. The monarch gave Bach a theme on which he improvised a fugue on the spot. Bach succeeded with flying colours in this musical challenge. Reinoud Van Mechelen has a particularly long history with Bach’s music, and in particular with the Passions, for which he sang the choral parts even as a child. Having performed the role of the Evangelist in both Passions on numerous occasions, under the baton of conductors like Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie and Simon Rattle, he presented his own version of the St John Passion for the first time in 2024 with a nocte temporis. Young boys were trained there to become skilled singers. Their talent and experience also attracted considerable interest abroad. One of them was Ivo de Vento (c. 1544–1575) who, after completing his training at the Antwerp choir school in 1556, was recruited by the Bavarian court in Munich to join the court chapel of Albert V. He was only a teenager at the time and would remain in the service of the ducal Wittelsbach family until his death. He may have moved to Venice in the 1560s to study the organ with Claudio Merulo. As is evident from some of his works, he came to appreciate the Italian musical fashion. In addition, Ivo de Vento published several books of German songs which were to have a major influence on composers such as Leonhard Lechner and Hans Leo Hassler. The Huelgas Ensemble returns as a regular feature to Passie van de Stemmen with a programme centred on this still somewhat unknown Flemish master, with his Missa Jesu nostra redemptio at its heart. Bio For over fifty years, the Huelgas Ensemble has been one of the most acclaimed ensembles specialising in the performance of polyphonic music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The ensemble is internationally renowned for its original programming of largely unknown works. Under the baton of Paul Van Nevel, they have performed at numerous world-famous music venues. Until 1548, he maintained the chapel of the Castilian royal family, which mainly attracted musicians from within the kingdom. Following the abdication of Emperor Charles V in 1556, the courts of father and son merged: Emperor Charles’s Capilla Flamenca, comprising almost exclusively musicians and composers from the Low Countries, was incorporated into Philip’s court. The result was an institution of exceptional calibre, in which musicians, repertoires and aesthetic sensibilities from diverse backgrounds coexisted. Philip’s third wife, Elisabeth of Valois, also had a great love of the arts and was passionate about dance and music. La Grande Chapelle recreates the soundscape of the Spanish court in its twofold dimension: that of the royal chapel, with its outstanding Franco-Flemish liturgical repertoire, and that of the queen’s court, where Spanish, French and Italian works were performed. This dual perspective allows listeners to experience, in a single musical journey, both the solemn ceremony of the chapel and the refined intimacy of the private quarters at the court of Philip II and Elisabeth of Valois. Featuring music by Pierre de Manchicourt, Nicolas Payen, Antonio de Cabezón, Juan García de Basurto and others Bio Spanish vocal-instrumental ensemble La Grande Chapelle was founded in 2005 by Albert Recasens with the aim of performing forgotten music from Spain’s musical heritage and polyphonic works from the 16 th to the 18 th centuries.
