His Missa Ecce ancilla Domini follows the tradition of masses built on pre‑existing material, in this case a Gregorian antiphon with Mary’s words at the Annunciation. In a clear and balanced style, Dufay brings melodic lines and polyphonic structures together to create a delicate, introspective whole. These works offer a clear insight into the evolution of his musical language. Italian influences, absorbed during his time in Rome, enter into a compelling dialogue with the clarity and sensitivity of the French style. In this music, fluid declamation and a subtle sense of phrasing consistently support the sacred text. Georg Philipp Telemann’s Fantasias for violin without basso continuo reveal the freedom and inventiveness of a style of writing without accompaniment. Virtuosity and melodic eloquence go hand in hand, suggesting a distinct sense of harmony and polyphony. With his Suite No. 4 for solo cello, Johann Sebastian Bach brings this genre to a peak, shaping music of remarkable formal balance and contrapuntal depth. Their brilliance and virtuosity made them emblematic instruments of major celebrations. In his Quatrième Ordre, François Couperin brings together short harpsichord pieces, each with an evocative title suggesting a particular mood or character. Ornamentation, rhythmic flexibility and musical expression shape this gallery of musical character studies. With the Chaconne, Op. 8, Jean‑Marie Leclair, for his part, illustrates the finesse of French violin playing, enriched by Italian influences and shaped by a style that is both virtuosic and expressive. Every nuance in the tension and strength of the airflow influences pitch, duration and volume, and also shapes the expression and narrative power. For the South Korean daegum player Hyelim Kim, a stable and controlled breath is indispensable for a soft, velvety sound. Ward Ginneberge lets his accordion sigh in an audiovisual work that centres on breathing. Sound artist Michele Spanghero treads the line between technology and mortality in his organ installation for pulmonary ventilators. Bertel Schollaert and the musicians of Tempvs Fvgit and Oltremontano Antwerpen rely on their own lungs. One thing is certain: after today, you will see breathing as so much more than simply the necessary intake of air. On the programme Ward Ginneberge / Simon Steen-Andersen (Studio 1) Breathing with accordion and video People breathe through their lungs, accordions through their bellows. For both, breathing is of vital importance. Through a video with a live soundtrack, Asthma allows us to see and hear the tender beauty and terrible horror of air currents. Bertel Schollaert / Possadas & Gísladóttir (Concertzaal scène) Night-time currents of the imagination In Objetos de la noche, Alberto Posadas captures the image of air moving through the night like a great beast revelling in the celestial realm. Using the baritone saxophone, the composer creates a soundscape full of mystery, movement and texture, resulting in a hypnotic soundscape. Immerse yourself in its ethereal, almost tangible atmosphere. Hyelim Kim / Korean traverse flute (Kamermuziekzaal) Centuries-old Asian repertoire reborn Whisper-soft and piercingly powerful. The Korean daegum resonates strongly with the breath of the player: slight changes in air pressure directly influence the pitch and timbre. Hyelim Kim masters this ancient instrument like no other and takes us on a journey through ancient sounds and new works. Tempvs Fvgit / Corsican polyphonie (Concertzaal) Breath as a source of harmony Corsican polyphony sounds raw and unpolished. Yet through nothing more than human breath, the male singers of Tempvs Fvgit build cathedrals of sound and evoke deep emotions. Their breath sets the rhythm, creating tension and release. Can their breath transport you, too? Oltremontano Antwerpen / Il canto per il Signore (Kamermuziekzaal) The warm soundscape of 16th-century wind instruments Let yourself be enveloped by the majestic sound of the alta capella: Renaissance wind instruments that brought chansons, madrigals and dances to life in the open air. Music from Italian collections, but with roots in ‘our’ culture, created by the ‘Oltremontani’ – meaning ‘from over the mountains’. Michele Spanghero / Ad lib. (Concertgebouw) Organ sounds to the rhythm of a machine In Ad lib., medical ventilators supply air to organ pipes in a contemplative, almost meditative composition. That becomes even more remarkable with three brothers playing. The combination of two, four and even six hands on a single piano creates an exceptional and spectacular musical experience: chamber music in its most intimate and festive form. Four brothers playing music together at such a high level is something you rarely see. Passionate, sensitive and talented: that’s the best way to describe the Van de Velde brothers. All four are among Belgium’s top musicians. Yannick, Jonathan, Nicholas and Samuel Van de Velde perform masterpieces by Bach, Mendelssohn, Ravel and others in a unique family ensemble for piano for two, four or six hands, accompanied by cello. From Johann Sebastian Bach’s intimate Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit in a four-hand arrangement by György Kurtág to Felix Mendelssohn’s cheerful and virtuosic Sonata for cello and piano, whose Adagio is a subtle tribute to Bach. Maurice Ravel composed his Rapsodie espagnole in 1908. It belongs to his most refined orchestral works and exudes a subtle, stylised Spanish atmosphere. Since the piece was originally composed as piano music, it is exceptionally well suited for a four-hands performance. In particular, the enchanting Habanera and compelling Feria will continue to linger long afterwards. It gets really busy at the piano with a six-handed version of a beloved opera paraphrase from Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini and the lively Galop-Marche by Albert Lavignac. Finally, the brothers conclude together with a beautiful Romance by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Programme Johann Sebastian Bach/G. Kurtág, Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit Felix Mendelssohn, Sonate for cello and piano, op. 58 Maurice Ravel, Rapsodie espagnole for piano four hands Albert Lavignac, Galop-Marche Gioachino Rossini, Il barbiere di Siviglia Sergej Rachmaninov, Romance Bio The Van de Velde brothers have been making music together since their childhood and gave their first performances at a very young age. They have performed in large concert halls in Belgium and beyond. Their biennial Pianofest festival in Sint-Niklaas has become a fixture in the musical landscape and was awarded the Golden Label by Klassiek Centraal. In this concert, a nocte temporis brings Telemann’s German clarity into dialogue with Rameau’s French refinement. Telemann’s Die Tageszeiten is the common thread. In four short cantatas, he represents an entire day in music, each section featuring a solo voice, a defining instrument and a concluding four-part chorus. Der Morgen (morning) exudes fresh energy with soprano and trumpet, making the first rays of sunshine almost tangible. In Der Mittag (noon), the mezzo-soprano is accompanied by a warm viola da gamba, perfect for the languid, golden midday light. Der Abend (evening) creates a sense of tranquillity with a tenor surrounded by two soft traversos. Die Nacht (night) concludes with deep bass notes, carried by the dark tones of two oboes and a bassoon – an evocation of silence, shadow and mystery. In between these segments, a nocte temporis performs scenes from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s operas. He too paints the morning, noon, evening and night, but with the theatrical grandeur of the French court. The result is a vibrant musical dialogue about light, time and the human imagination – a 24-hour journey through the Baroque era in which Telemann and Rameau complement each other with surprising naturalness. Programma Georg-Philipp Telemann, Die Tageszeiten Jean-Philippe Rameau, opera excerpts Bio Tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen founded a nocte temporis in 2016. The ensemble began as a chamber music group and has since developed into a baroque orchestra. A nocte temporis received positive reviews for their CDs featuring music by, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Their album featuring music by Louis-Nicolas Clérambault has won several awards, including CHOC de Classica, Diapason d’or, Diamant d’Opéra and Le Choix de France Musique. With six singers and a refined ensemble of Baroque violins, violas da gamba, organ and recorders, a unique soundscape is created in which centuries-old melodies, well-known Christmas carols, forgotten gems and fresh arrangements are brought back to life. This intimate concert is a poetic and musical account of his countless loves and desires. How many lovers did he have? His stars, his women brought splendour to the French court. Often, they took advantage of him just as much as he did of them. Different times, different customs. Or not always? New passions are constantly born in the human heart, so that when one dies out, another almost always flares up. Klara radio presenter Sieglinde Michiel lets the king’s wives speak from the depths of their hearts. In this concert, lyrics and music go hand in hand. Each work transports you straight to the court of Louis XIV and his predecessors, in the epicentre of French splendour. Stunning arias for solo soprano alternate with rich instrumental pieces and sparkling tutti passages. Featuring music by François Couperin, Pierre Guédron, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Michel Lambert. Bio Belgian ensemble Les Abbagliati takes its name from the informal Venetian academy of arts and sciences of the 17 th century. The music of the 17 th and 18 th centuries is their favourite field of expertise, and in their programmes they enjoy seeking out a combination of well-known masterpieces and new discoveries, ranging from famous composers to lesser-known masters. -------------------------------- >>> This concert is part of the highlight Man man man. A programme about masculinity in all its forms. Boys, men, fathers, and sons find themselves at a turning point. Traditional images of manhood are being questioned, while new forms of masculinity are still taking shape. Petrushka, the iconic 1911 ballet by Igor Stravinsky, tells the haunting tale of a puppet who is brought to life, only to experience love, jealousy, and ultimately death at the hands of another doll. In a radical reinterpretation, choreographer Michiel Vandevelde breathes new life into Petrushka. This time, Petrushka is a rebellious figure. The choreography, composed of AI-generated dance movements, is gradually pushed to its extremes. What remains of humanity when social interaction has been fully digitised? Only a puppet can show us. Vandevelde’s glitch- and pop-infused movements and physically demanding choreography results in a hypnotic yet confronting experience. Seventeen singers create a soundscape with no hierarchy: sometimes they move as a single swarm, sometimes in small groups. Melodies are passed on like batons; voices come together and drift apart again. As a member of the audience, you are free to move around the space and choose for yourself where and how to listen. Every position affects the acoustics and, consequently, your unique experience. Conductor Kaspars Putniņš leads the Flemish Radio Choir through a timeless repertoire: from the 14 th -century splendour of Guillaume de Machaut to the visionary sounds of contemporary masters such as Julia Wolfe, Caroline Shaw, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir and Kaija Saariaho. Polyphony thus appears in various forms and genres, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Singer Adja Fassa completes the line-up, adding a whole new artistic dimension with her improvisational vocals and original music. The result is a living organism – just like society. In the impressively restored chapel at the Paul Van Ostaijen site, a concert experience is created that places you right at the heart of the music. The careful renovation of this former monastic chapel, built in 1937, preserves its heritage, enhances its acoustic qualities and transforms the chapel into a powerful space that inspires creativity. More than 300 years after its premiere in Leipzig, it still moves us deeply, with its vivid musicality, subdued chorales and meditative arias. Reinoud Van Mechelen has a particularly long history with Bach’s music, and in particular with the Passions, for which he sang the choral parts even as a child. Having performed the role of the Evangelist in both Passions on numerous occasions, under the baton of conductors like Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie and Simon Rattle, he presented his own version of the St John Passion for the first time in 2024 with a nocte temporis. This production was invited to the Festival International d’Opéra Baroque de Beaune in the summer of 2025, where the ensemble and its artistic director made a strong impression and received rave reviews, including from Le Figaro and Forum Opera. Press “Le ténor Reinoud Van Mechelen fait partie de ces quelques élus qui échappent aux classifications. (...) Le miracle, c’est que chacune de ses interprétations relève de l’accomplissement. Or perhaps you’re more of a fan of festive folk music? Don’t worry! The young Schulhoff Trio combines both styles in their brand-new concert programme. The trio consists of three young, energetic musicians who share a passion for Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff. He was one of the first to introduce jazz, dance rhythms and modern influences into classical music, until his career was tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. Driven by their love for Schulhoff’s Concertino, this trio has grown into a close-knit ensemble dedicated to discovering lesser-known repertoire and arrangements for flute, viola and double bass. This lively programme takes you on a journey from festive Baroque to traditional folk music. Michael Haydn’s Divertimento opens in a light and playful manner, followed by intimate Bach arrangements from the Goldberg Variations. Koechlin’s Trio is a subtle tribute to Bach and serves as a bridge to Bartók’s fiery Romanian folk dances. The finale is Schulhoff’s own Concertino: an irresistible blend of tradition, humour, rhythm and folk music. This piece brings together the diverse musical styles and elements heard in the previous works: tradition is thus united with folk music! The finale to the concert is sure to go out with a bang! With the help of his compagnon de route, the enchanting strings player Franco Pavan, he warms up his vocal cords one last time especially for the Concertgebouw, for a selection of frottole (songs from the Italian Renaissance). Young boys were trained there to become skilled singers. Their talent and experience also attracted considerable interest abroad. One of them was Ivo de Vento (c. 1544–1575) who, after completing his training at the Antwerp choir school in 1556, was recruited by the Bavarian court in Munich to join the court chapel of Albert V. He was only a teenager at the time and would remain in the service of the ducal Wittelsbach family until his death. He may have moved to Venice in the 1560s to study the organ with Claudio Merulo. As is evident from some of his works, he came to appreciate the Italian musical fashion. In addition, Ivo de Vento published several books of German songs which were to have a major influence on composers such as Leonhard Lechner and Hans Leo Hassler. The Huelgas Ensemble returns as a regular feature to Passie van de Stemmen with a programme centred on this still somewhat unknown Flemish master, with his Missa Jesu nostra redemptio at its heart. Bio For over fifty years, the Huelgas Ensemble has been one of the most acclaimed ensembles specialising in the performance of polyphonic music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The ensemble is internationally renowned for its original programming of largely unknown works. Under the baton of Paul Van Nevel, they have performed at numerous world-famous music venues. Their CD recordings have won several major awards. -------------------------- >>> This concert is part of Voices of Passion 2027. During this festival edition, discover how Franco-Flemish composers of the 16th century travelled along international routes, finding fertile ground wherever they went. Along with them, music—preserved in manuscript and print—resounded in numerous urban centres, at princely courts, and in chapels, churches, and cathedrals. Leuven and polyphony have been closely intertwined for centuries. Together with the Alamire Foundation, 30CC highlights this tradition, as well as current scholarship and performance practice, during the Passion of the Voices festival. Until 1548, he maintained the chapel of the Castilian royal family, which mainly attracted musicians from within the kingdom. Following the abdication of Emperor Charles V in 1556, the courts of father and son merged: Emperor Charles’s Capilla Flamenca, comprising almost exclusively musicians and composers from the Low Countries, was incorporated into Philip’s court. The result was an institution of exceptional calibre, in which musicians, repertoires and aesthetic sensibilities from diverse backgrounds coexisted. Philip’s third wife, Elisabeth of Valois, also had a great love of the arts and was passionate about dance and music. La Grande Chapelle recreates the soundscape of the Spanish court in its twofold dimension: that of the royal chapel, with its outstanding Franco-Flemish liturgical repertoire, and that of the queen’s court, where Spanish, French and Italian works were performed. This dual perspective allows listeners to experience, in a single musical journey, both the solemn ceremony of the chapel and the refined intimacy of the private quarters at the court of Philip II and Elisabeth of Valois. Featuring music by Pierre de Manchicourt, Nicolas Payen, Antonio de Cabezón, Juan García de Basurto and others Bio Spanish vocal-instrumental ensemble La Grande Chapelle was founded in 2005 by Albert Recasens with the aim of performing forgotten music from Spain’s musical heritage and polyphonic works from the 16 th to the 18 th centuries. Through its own independent record label, Lauda, the ensemble releases CDs featuring music from Spain’s Golden Age, as well as masterpieces from the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque periods. ------------------------------ >>> This concert is part of Voices of Passion 2027.
