More than you might think. John Dowland (1563–1626) and Nick Drake (1948–1974) shared a fascination with the dark, with that fragile beauty that resides somewhere between beauty and sorrow. Klang collective brings these two 'knights of melancholy' together at AMUZ. Soprano Annelies Van Gramberen and singer-songwriter Sim Van Thienen form an unlikely yet compelling duo. Renaissance music and seventies folk may sound like a bold combination, but in their hands, it feels surprisingly natural. With vocal and instrumental loops, electronics, and an arsenal of guitars, they create a rich soundscape. At one moment, a song sounds wonderfully familiar, then it gets deconstructed, stretched, and reshaped into something new. Both familiar and alienating at the same time. “KLANG Collective makes music for twilight, when the last light leaves the sky and everything momentarily holds its breath” – De Tijd. Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem is one such work: a great blanket of sound, full of hope and trust, that wraps comfortingly around you. Written for the funeral of Empress Maria of Austria, this is no scream of despair, but a paragon of genuinely felt serenity: voices that carry, embrace and release each other in a play of shadow and light. Tenebrae breathes life into the Requiem with transparent textures in which every nuance lights up like a spark. The six voices in the polyphony unfurl like a living organism, sober when necessary, intense when the moment demands. The motets of Victoria’s contemporary, Alonso Lobo, give further colour to the programme: more earthly, more chromatic and somewhat restless, as if the shifting spirit of the times were scratching away at the Renaissance sound.

IYAP – Ensemble Pampinea

門票: €8

AMUZ Antwerpen

Fortuna, will you spare us? Trio Turbulences Founded in 2024 at the Haute École de Musique de Genève, Trio Turbulences unites voice, cornett and lute in an artistic practice rooted in original historical sources, where improvisation and composition are as central to the performance as the repertoire itself. Its deliberately intimate instrumentation allows the cornett’s voice-like timbre to blend seamlessly with the singer, creating a rare expressive and rhetorical intensity that brings 16th- and early 17th-century music to life as a living, breathing creative act. Drawing on repertoire from the 14th to 16th century, the Basel-based musicians, all formed at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, craft performances that are as intimate and expressive as they are scenic and immersive, weaving movement and narrative into every concert so that audiences become participants in a living story. Since winning an internal competition at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and performing at the fringe of the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht in 2024, KIMA has continued to build its reputation across Europe with appearances at Festival Linee in San Marino, ReRenaissance Basel, Kloster Schönthal, and concert venues in Basel and Mulhouse.

K L A N G c o ll e c t i v e — D O W L N D R A K E

門票

Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent (Music centre De Bijloke)

Annelies van Gramberen en Sim Van Thienen slaan een brug tussen luitist John Dowland en singer-songwriter Nick Drake

Les Meslanges

門票: €30 – €34

AMUZ Antwerpen (St.-Andrieskerk)

Les Voyages d'Orphée, entre Normandie et Flandres In the first decades of the 17th century, music travelled faster and further than ever. Composers from the Low Countries moved southwards, prints circulated and styles merged. Jehan Titelouze (c. 1563-1633), who was born in Saint-Omer and worked at Rouen Cathedral, embodies this trend. He stands at the crossroads of the Renaissance and the Baroque, with one foot in Franco-French polyphony and the other in a new, expressive, French musical language. Les Meslanges places Titelouze at the centre of a programme that brings the intricate international network of musicians, styles and repertoire to your ears. Masses, motets, hymns and canticles alternate with organ music, in dialogue with works by Orlandus Lassus and other contemporaries from the Low Countries. The big revelation is a recently rediscovered mass by Titelouze himself: an impressive musicological discovery and a rare glimpse of the vocal oeuvre of a composer we know best as a pioneer of organ music. Fasten your seatbelts for Les Voyages d’Orphée: a lively snapshot of Europe in transition.

Collegium Vocale Gent

門票: €38 – €42

AMUZ Antwerpen

Orlandus Lassus: Lagrime di San Pietro In Lagrime di San Pietro, Orlandus Lassus built a monumental bridge between the past and future. It is like stepping into a diary: 21 miniatures in which every voice is a character, silences thrum with emotion and melodies weave between the parts like thoughts that refuse to be banished. Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent know this piece like no others, giving voice to the many layers of Lassus’ final composition without smoothing away the tension or vulnerability. The result sounds precise, clear and authentic, free of sentiment but so very intense: every turn in the music holds meaning, and every combination of notes is a moment of connection and insight. Eleven years after they brought this magnum opus to our stage, it’s time for a long-awaited encore. The message? But in his motets, the ‘Prince of Venosa’ reveals himself in a different light. The Sacrarum Cantionum are the soundtrack to a quest for calm, clarity and order. The always excellent Stile Antico presents Gesualdo’s most beautiful songs for five voices in Latin with disarming transparency: each voice can be heard separately, yet collectively they form an organic fabric of sound that constantly reveals new timbres and textures. This rarely performed collection – subjected to new research by the Alamire Foundation especially for the occasion – reveals a Gesualdo who is both experimental and profoundly spiritual: a fascinating sound portrait of one of the most remarkable artistic personalities alive in 1600.

Huelgas Ensemble

門票: €34 – €38

AMUZ Antwerpen (St.-Andrieskerk)

The Psalms of Claude Le Jeune Claude Le Jeune’s contemporaries considered him a rightful heir to Orlandus Lassus. But he was no lacklustre follower. As a devout Huguenot, Le Jeune gave the psalms a distinct voice, with rhythmic sharpness and surprising chromaticism, driven by the cadence of the French language. Le Jeune’s polyphony sounds both cautious and rebellious: a polyphony that is aware of the changing times and thus finds itself stretched almost to breaking point. Huelgas Ensemble – the international benchmark for this repertoire for more than half a century – pleads the case for this underestimated composer. The singers perform Le Jeune’s psalms with analytical sharpness and expressive freedom, all in the service of the man who pushed polyphonic Europe towards the future.

Transports Publics

門票: €26 – €30

AMUZ Antwerpen

The Coudenberg Connection: Richard Dering in Brussels In 1617, there was no future for a Catholic composer like Richard Dering in London. He sought a solution in the Low Countries, where English musicians had enjoyed an outstanding reputation for decades. Dering followed in the footsteps of his colleague Peter Philips, travelling from Antwerp to Brussels, where he found work at a Benedictine convent at the foot of the Coudenberg, right opposite the cathedral. Years later, Dering returned to his home country as a private organist to Queen Henrietta Maria, the consort of Charles I. Transports Publics follows Dering’s musical peregrinations with exquisite madrigals, elegant instrumental dances and intimate motets that even charmed Oliver Cromwell! When Pomponio Nenna published his first book of madrigals in the city, he entered an arena where the limits of the genre were being constantly pushed back. In Carlo Gesualdo’s shadow, Nenna sought a new intensity: he combined clever polyphony with harsh dissonances, sharp modulations and a razor-sharp treatment of the text. Old techniques, such as the fauxbourdon, collided with new expressive freedoms, offering a foretaste of what would come to be known as the seconda pratica. Comet Musicke rides the slipstream of the Baroque in Nenna’s first collection of songs for five voices, and in the instrumental sound experiments of Giovanni de Macque, Giovanni Maria Trabaci and Stefano Felis. Expect music that seeks the limits of technique and expression, heading unmistakably towards a new age.

Près de votre Oreille

門票: €26 – €30

AMUZ Antwerpen

Blessed Echoes Long before Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, there were singer-songwriters who could enchant an audience with no more than a voice and a few strings. In England around 1600, their names were Dowland, Campion and Morely, and their lute songs were the pop ballads of the time: personal, poetic and disarmingly simple. What makes this music so powerful is its directness: a game of questions and answers between the voice and the instrument. Près de Votre Oreille unearths the most beautiful gems of this iconic repertoire. Master of melancholy John Dowland takes centre stage, flanked by lesser-known contemporaries. The warm sound of the viol and the elegant energy of the lute create a combination that sounds both intimate and rich: a velvet bed of sound for the voice to sink into. It was not a calm city: Liège was a political and religious crossroads where everything was a show of power. The ‘grandes entrées’ of Ernest and Ferdinand of Bavaria – archbishops and prince-electors of Cologne – were a form of political theatre whose every element was designed to radiate authority, including triumphal arches made of wood and canvas, the ringing of bells, cannon fire and impressive music. InAlto reconstructs the drama of these ceremonial processions with motets, songs and madrigals by composers associated with the court of Liège. Jean de Castro represents the local music scene; Anton Gosswin reflects Bavarian connections; René del Mel, Pierre Bonhomme and Bernardino Mosto illustrate the court’s cosmopolitan taste. Although Spain gets all the attention in music history, a distinct tradition was blooming in Portugal that was at least as rich and refined. In cities such as Évora – a centre of humanism, with a cathedral and university – and the Alentejo region, a repertoire emerged that united devotion, rhetoric and sound colour in a unique manner. Officium Ensemble – the benchmark for Iberian polyphony since the year 2000 – reveals the success story that was the Portuguese Renaissance, with works by Manuel Cardoso, Estêvão Lopes Morago and their contemporaries from the region. The programme moves between intimate passion music and grandiose polychoral works, some of which have not been heard for centuries. With their versatile voices and clear choir sound, the twelve singers reveal what makes Portuguese polyphony so special: concentrated expression and astonishing vitality.

Ensemble Irini

門票: €34

AMUZ Antwerpen (St.-Jacobskerk)

Giovanni Gabrieli: Post Tenebras Post tenebras (spero lucem) – after the darkness, I hope for light – perfectly encapsulates Ensemble Irini’s intentions for this programme: a return to the early days of the Venetian and Byzantine Baroque in an unusual, two-choir setting with brass instruments: grand, spatial and deeply spiritual. On one side of the spectrum is Giovanni Gabrieli, the master of polychorality, at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. His Sacrae cantiones think in terms of space, with choirs of voices and instruments as his building blocks. On the other side are the virtuoso, contemplative hymns of Konstantinos of Aghialos and Joasaph of Mount Athos, in which time becomes music and music becomes time. Post Tenebras marks a new stage in Irini Ensemble’s musical journey, but their unique sound remains pristine: warm, dark, polymorphous and free from early music stereotypes.

Scherzi Musicali

門票: €30 – €34

AMUZ Antwerpen

Dowland in Copenhagen At the Danish court, the most melancholic of all lute masters found recognition, freedom and a monarch who paid generously. Four hundred years after Dowland’s birth, Scherzi Musicali follows him to Scandinavia, where his songs resonate between northern light and courtly sophistication. Although the songs are usually performed by one singer with a lute, Nicolas Achten has opted for four voices and four lutes: a consort that allows the music to breathe beyond the intimacy of the royal chambers. The sound is broader, richer, but still poetic and on a human scale. Works by Danish contemporaries such as Nielsen, Aagesen and Pederson, who coloured Dowland’s stay in the North, sketch out an eminent musical culture in which English refinement, continental taste and Scandinavian clarity combine.

More Maiorum

門票: €26 – €30

AMUZ Antwerpen

Floridi Virtuosi d’Italia: Brilliant Virtuosos from Italy Around 1600, Antwerp was a bustling commercial metropolis, but also a flourishing market for music. Italian madrigals were eagerly printed and reprinted, often ornamented with virtuoso diminutions. In Floridi virtuosi d’Italia, More Maiorum turns the spotlight on the Italian composers whose work featured most often in prints made in Antwerp at the time. Their work is alternated with brilliant instrumental madrigal adaptations by virtuosos including the English harpsichord specialist Peter Philips, who emigrated to the Low Countries, and the lute player Emanuel Adriaenssen – eloquent examples of how the Italian fashion was picked up by local artists. This programme is the soundtrack to a story of trendsetters and followers of fashion, inspiration versus creation, and art that zigzagged across Europe long before the Schengen Agreement unlocked the borders.

Cappella Mariana

門票: €30 – €34

AMUZ Antwerpen

Treasures from Golden Prague At the end of the 16th century, a new chapter began in the chronicles of Prague. Under Emperor Rudolph II, the Bohemian capital became a cosmopolitan hub of artists, musicians, scholars and alchemists. Besides Italian madrigalists, the court also attracted composers from the Franco-Flemish tradition, who made their mark on the Bohemian music scene. In this panorama of Golden Prague, a prominent place is reserved for Kryštof Harant, whose masses for five voices are an impressive synthesis of northern polyphony and southern warmth. We will also hear work by the kapellmeister to the royal court, Philippe de Monte, and contemporaries such as Luca Marenzio and Orlandus Lassus, along with rare Bohemian songs such as the anonymous Otc?e Buoha nebeske´ho. Even then, he was considered to be the quintessential European composer: at home in every style and understood in every country. In his five-voice settings of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, Lassus demonstrates how overwhelming quiet can be. The tectonics of the counterpoint are without equal, thanks to voices slipping over one another in alternating combinations and chords that wrench and grind but never collide. As a master colourist, Lassus gives every Hebrew letter at the beginning of the verses a different timbre, with the virtuosity of an artist painting illuminated initials in a manuscript. The Belgian Utopia Ensemble turns Lassus’ brilliant music into an experience: polyphonic lamentations alternate with Gregorian responsories and motets, so that text, sound and silence mirror each other in a cathartic ritual.

New York Polyphony

門票: €26 – €30

AMUZ Antwerpen

A New Wind: Hassler & Handl Around 1600, a new wind was blowing through Central Europe. Ideas travelled northwards from Venice: polychorality, gorgeous timbres and musical flair breathed new life into Franco-Flemish counterpoint. Hans Leo Hassler absorbed this Venetian glow from Andrea Gabrieli and transmuted it into an elegant, transparent style in Nuremberg. Jacob Handl was also inspired by the Venetian style. He was born in Slovenia and worked, among others, for the Austrian Emperor and the Bishop of Olomouc. New York Polyphony – an ensemble acclaimed around the world for its rich, natural sound and superior musicianship – shows how the two composers combined southern panache with northern depth. The maestro of St Mark’s takes the traditional recipe for vespers as his starting point – a combination of psalms, hymns and canticles – but transforms it into spectacular sound of the highest calibre. Opera and liturgy, old and new, devotion and sensuality: everything collides and merges into one grandiose design. The score exudes the spaciousness of the basilica where Monteverdi developed the sound of the future, as if its graceful galleries, balconies and choir stalls inspired the architecture of the sound. Monteverdi is a genius with voices, but also helps himself to cornetts, trombones, strings, the organ and basso continuo, not as decorative elements but as colours in a palette. Some passages are monumental; others are sober and narrative or out-and-out virtuoso. What could be more wonderful than exploring this masterly labyrinth with Vox Luminis: a collective of musical perfectionists, each with their head in the sources and their heart in their voice.

The Gesualdo Six

門票: €38 – €42

AMUZ Antwerpen

England, 1600 At the dawn of the 17th century, England was balancing on a faultline. Its cultural flourishing under Elizabeth I went hand in hand with religious repression, political uncertainty and a growing sense of threat. The tension can be felt in the music of the time. Composers sought new means of expression and found them in emphatic chromaticism, thorough expression of the text and stark contrasts. The Gesualdo Six evoke this darkly glowing England with an intense programme of sacred and secular music. Work by William Byrd – a Catholic in a Protestant nation – stand alongside the refined craftsmanship of Orlando Gibbons, the theatrical precision of Thomas Weelkes, John Dowland’s melancholy and the expressive madrigals of Thomas Morley. The England that emerged from their music had a voice of its own in the many-voiced choir of Europe: apparently under control, but full of inner tension.

Lucile Richardot, Ensemble Correspondances, Sébastien Daucé, ed.

門票: €17

Les Festivals de Wallonie (Église Saint-Jacques)

Winner of the 2025 Victoires de la Musique Classique, Lucile Richardot, accompanied by Sébastien Daucé and the Correspondances ensemble, takes us to the heart of the Swedish court in the 17th century. In La Bomba Flamenca he combines his own imagination with that of Charles, and finds inspiration in the Saint Bavo Cathedral, where the emperor was baptised in 1500, for a kaleidoscopic ritual, in which magnificent Flemish and Spanish polyphony is interwoven with traditional Arabic-Andalusian chants. This imaginary requiem of the emperor, born in Ghent, celebrates a turbulent era, at the crossroads of the Middle Ages and modern times, an era as complex as our own. © Léo-Paul Horlier - La Bomba FlamencaProgrammeMusic by, among others, Mateo Flecha el Viejo, Cristóbal de Morales and Clément Janequin.PerformersCompagnie La TempêteSimon-Pierre Bestion, concept, arrangements, mise en espace & artistic directionMarianne Pelcerf, lighting designSebian Falk, lighting operationFlorian Delattre, general coordinationAmélie Raison, soprano soloistAxelle Verner, mezzo-soprano soloistFanny Châtelain, contralto soloistEdouard Monjanel, tenor soloistRené Ramos Premier, bass soloistFollow the artistsLa Tempête: website | facebook | instagram | youtube | soundcloudPractical informationDate: Thursday 10 September 2026Address: Sint-Baafsplein 1, 9000 GhentTicket pricesRang 1 60 euroRang 2 42 euroUiTPAS reduced price Tickets GentBuy your ticket hereTiming19:15 Doors open20:00 Concert starts22:00 Expected endThere is no intermission. Please note that there are no cloakroom facilities or toilets available at this venue.AccessibilityYou can find more information about the accessibility of the cathedral on this page.If you require additional or specific assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us via toegankelijkheid@festival.be or +32 9 243 94 94.Getting thereThe nearest bicycle parking facilities are located in Lange Kruisstraat and Maaseikstraat.Travel by train: book your Bravo! For the young Marin Marais, whom we chiefly know as a virtuoso of the viola da gamba and a composer of sublime chamber music, it was his operatic debut. He collaborated with Louis Lully, the eldest son of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the Italian who, as court composer to Louis XIV, invented and elevated the genre of tragédie lyrique to great heights. The gripping libretto tells the story of Alcide’s (Hercules) unrequited, illicit love for Iole, who in turn is in love with Alcide’s friend Philoctète. This provides ample opportunity to showcase all the strengths of French baroque opera: from vocal drama, to brilliantly orchestrated orchestral passages and elegant dances. With a nocte temporis, the Choeur de Chambre de Namur and an array of splendid soloists, it promises to be a truly colourful French baroque evening. © Gabriel Balaguera - Choeur de Chambre de Namur In cooperation with Muziekcentrum De Bijloke ProgrammeAlcide ou Le Triomphe d'HerculeLouis Lully en Marin Marais, musicJean-Galbert de Campistron, librettoPerformersa nocte temporisChoeur de Chambre de NamurReinoud Van Mechelen, tenor and artistic directionFollow the artistsa nocte temporis: website | instagram | facebook Chœur de Chambre de Namur: website | facebook | instagram Practical informationDate: Saturday 19 September 2026Address: Bijlokekaai 7, 9000 GhentTicket pricesRang 1 40 euroRang 2 34 euroUiTPAS reduced price Tickets GentBuy your ticket hereTiming19:15 Doors open20:00 Concert starts22:20 Expected endThere will be a 30-minute break. There are toilets available at the venue, including accessible facilities.A cloakroom is also available.AccessibilityThe concert venue is wheelchair accessible. Winners of First Prize at the Concours International Accordé’Opale and named Coup de Cœur at the Royal Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert, Duo Kiasma stands out for the freedom and boldness of its arrangements that are neither faithful transcriptions nor simple adaptations. POLARIS marks a decisive milestone in this nomadic journey. Like the star from which it takes its name, the album serves as a guiding point within an ever-expanding aesthetic universe. The monks take possession of the choir under the shouts, the songs and the tumult. A thousand years later, around the sumptuous polyphonies of the Troparia in Winchester, four musicians in turn stand on the steps of an imaginary choir to revive this clash between two worlds: insiders against outsiders and the past against the present.

La Tempête

門票: €30 – €50

Bozar Brussel (Henry Le Boeuf Hall)

The last time the French ensemble La Tempête visited Bozar, our concert hall was bathed in a golden glow and Stravinsky sparkled alongside De Machaut. The British ensemble, known for their uncompromising collective playing style, exceptional intensity and shared precision, open our season with a masterpiece of the Baroque that is wreathed in mystery. Bach began his Herculean task in 1733 but only completed the piece 15 years later; he probably never witnessed a full performance of the mass. Why he composed the mass is still unclear: the Mass in B Minor is too colossal for the liturgy and too serious for court. Might Bach have considered the composition to be his last will and testament, a panorama of his creative world? The questions surrounding it do not detract from the power of the music: the Kyrie, which grips us from the very first notes, the unfettered jubilance of the Gloria and the moving Agnus Dei that is based on an aria from a wedding serenade. From ecstasy to meditation, virtuoso fugues to chordal stillness, Catholic devotion to Lutheran clarity – a whole world echoes in this triumph of human skill.

Logan Lopez Gonzalez

門票: €16

Bozar Brussel (Henry Le Boeuf Hall)

A close affinity exists between the English Baroque repertoire and twentieth-century British art songs. Their original anthology, performed on historical instruments, will go straight to your chamber music heart! The programme of intimate and virtuoso miniatures from the 19th century takes a grand tour of Europe. In Spain, the guitar and voice have shared a folk tradition for centuries; composers including Fernando Sor and Pablo de Sarasate sent the sound out into the world. Alongside arrangements by Louis Spohr and Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, you will also hear works by Frédéric Burgmüller and Friedrich Dotzauer, who wove cello and guitar into subtle, contrapuntal dialogues. A name never to forget again is Pauline Viardot, whose songs can be heard in new arrangements. Viardot built up a career in Paris, moved in the highest echelons of the musical world and navigated gracefully between Spanish folk, French mélodie and the German Lied.

Musicatreize

門票: €18

Les Festivals de Wallonie (Mars - Arsonic)

Under the inspired direction of Roland Hayrabedian, the exceptional vocal ensemble Musicatreize, born in Marseille, has been forging a fascinating dialogue between the Renaissance and today's creation for nearly forty years. Quentin played the violin at the Académie Royale de Musique, as well as penning an impressive oeuvre: 36 violin sonatas, 80 trios and 7 quartets. The latter placed him among the very first French composers to try their hand at the emerging genre. His quartets combine Italian elegance with German architecture and French refinement, but they disappeared from sight for centuries – until now. BREZZA brings historical instruments into play, referring to Baroque treatises to interpret the music as faithfully as possible. This is a dazzling ensemble, attracting rich praise in contests in Barcelona, Gijón en Utrecht, and in the International Young Artists’ Presentation (IYAP) at Laus Polyphoniae 2022. The monophonic singing tradition was coming under pressure from increasingly rich polyphony – but that didn’t mean that old repertoires and styles had disappeared for good. This field of tension is where Marc Mauillon and Les Trouveurs are in their element. The revelation of IYAP 2025, the young ensemble Les Trouveurs, is back on stage at AMUZ, this time with a programme that combines hymns of praise from the Cantigas de Santa Maria with rhythmically sophisticated motets, Italian ballate by Francesco Landini and refined troubadour songs by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. Mauillon, known for his intense interpretations of work by Guillaume de Machaut, proves once again how fresh and up-to-date this repertoire can sound. The text “C’est douleur non pareille” – it is unequalled sorrow – is the recurrent motif in this requiem. Six voices weave themselves around Gregorian melodies as music by Josquin des Prez – Richafort’s teacher and idol – trickles through the staves. Richafort recalls some of Josquin’s key works, sometimes in the form of a quotation, at other times as a melodic transformation. That was how Renaissance composers worked: they listened, built, referred back and remodelled. Familiar music gained new meaning, not for lack of creativity but as a tribute to precious traditions and the genius of their colleagues. Barbora Kabátková and the soloists at Collegium Vocale Gent intertwine Richafort’s polyphony with monophonic hymns from the Office for the Dead and close with Fortuna desperata – a madrigal that inspired both Josquin and Richafort.

Tears into Light — Sofie Vanden Eynde & Imago Mundi

門票: €26 – €32

Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent

John Dowland ontmoet Armeense rouwmuziek in deze liefdesbrief aan de melancholie

The Allegory of Desire

門票: €31

Concertgebouw Brugge (Concertzaal ongenummerd)

Together with Vocalconsort Berlin and the Tunisian-Belgian singer Ghalia Benali, the 30-year-old (30!) ensemble Zefiro Torna brings East and West together once again in their acclaimed production The Allegory of Desire. That becomes even more remarkable with three brothers playing. The combination of two, four and even six hands on a single piano creates an exceptional and spectacular musical experience: chamber music in its most intimate and festive form. Four brothers playing music together at such a high level is something you rarely see. Passionate, sensitive and talented: that’s the best way to describe the Van de Velde brothers. All four are among Belgium’s top musicians. Yannick, Jonathan, Nicholas and Samuel Van de Velde perform masterpieces by Bach, Mendelssohn, Ravel and others in a unique family ensemble for piano for two, four or six hands, accompanied by cello. From Johann Sebastian Bach’s intimate Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit in a four-hand arrangement by György Kurtág to Felix Mendelssohn’s cheerful and virtuosic Sonata for cello and piano, whose Adagio is a subtle tribute to Bach. Maurice Ravel composed his Rapsodie espagnole in 1908. It belongs to his most refined orchestral works and exudes a subtle, stylised Spanish atmosphere. Since the piece was originally composed as piano music, it is exceptionally well suited for a four-hands performance. In particular, the enchanting Habanera and compelling Feria will continue to linger long afterwards. It gets really busy at the piano with a six-handed version of a beloved opera paraphrase from Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini and the lively Galop-Marche by Albert Lavignac. Finally, the brothers conclude together with a beautiful Romance by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Programme Johann Sebastian Bach/G. Kurtág, Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit Felix Mendelssohn, Sonate for cello and piano, op. 58 Maurice Ravel, Rapsodie espagnole for piano four hands Albert Lavignac, Galop-Marche Gioachino Rossini, Il barbiere di Siviglia Sergej Rachmaninov, Romance Bio The Van de Velde brothers have been making music together since their childhood and gave their first performances at a very young age. They have performed in large concert halls in Belgium and beyond. Their biennial Pianofest festival in Sint-Niklaas has become a fixture in the musical landscape and was awarded the Golden Label by Klassiek Centraal. This programme focuses on two cantatas that demonstrate his theatrical instinct, artistic freedom and unusually prominent sense of humour. Ino is a mythological drama about a Theban princess who is driven to madness by her husband and the gods. It finds its perfect counterpart in Du angenehmer Weiberorden – a humorous reflection on expectations of marriage and human illusions. The soprano Sophie Karthaüser switches effortlessly between the despairing princess and the blushing bride as Les Muffatti serves up an instrumental repertoire that showcases Telemann’s imagination and creativity. Natale Monferrato is one of them. This contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi and successor to Francesco Cavalli at St Mark’s Basilica was certainly no obscure figure: Monferrato occupied a key position at the heart of the Venetian music scene. Still, his music is seldom heard in 2026. His motets for alto reveal what we have been missing: concentrated Baroque in which devotion and drama constantly spur each other on. Countertenor Paulin Bündgen and Ensemble Céladon present this music without frills, but with a generous combination of several basso continuo instruments. Other than that, we’ll refrain from archaeological metaphors or slick promotion. This is beautiful music – no more and no less!

Flagey Academy & Lorenzo Gatto

門票: €12

Flagey (Studio 4)

The Flagey Academy Youth Choir opens December 2026 with a concert devoted to spirituality and beauty. For this special occasion, the young singers, under the direction of Zeno Popescu, are joined by a string orchestra led by Brussels-born violinist Lorenzo Gatto. The programme features Antonio Vivaldi ’s Gloria, RV 589, composed for the Ospedale della Pietà, the Venetian orphanage renowned throughout Europe for the exceptional quality of its musical training. In keeping with this tradition, the work reflects Flagey Academy’s broader mission, where social engagement and high-level musical education go hand in hand. The concert continues with Songs of Sanctuary by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, whose music draws on classical music, jazz, and ethnic musical traditions. The work marks the beginning of the Adiemus series, celebrated for its distinctive blend of invented vocal sounds and timeless melodic writing. Through its rich and evocative harmonies, the piece unfolds a serene and meditative sonic world, carried by the expressive power of the human voice. Together, these works create an intense and deeply immersive concert experience, in which the young voices of Flagey Academy give shape to a radiant, hopeful musical landscape.

Die Tageszeiten

門票: €27 – €30

30CC/Schouwburg

Historians do not know whether Telemann and Rameau ever actually met, but one thing is beyond doubt: both composers were leading masters of the late Baroque, each adding an unrivalled flair to their own style. In this concert, a nocte temporis brings Telemann’s German clarity into dialogue with Rameau’s French refinement. Telemann’s Die Tageszeiten is the common thread. In four short cantatas, he represents an entire day in music, each section featuring a solo voice, a defining instrument and a concluding four-part chorus. Der Morgen (morning) exudes fresh energy with soprano and trumpet, making the first rays of sunshine almost tangible. In Der Mittag (noon), the mezzo-soprano is accompanied by a warm viola da gamba, perfect for the languid, golden midday light. Der Abend (evening) creates a sense of tranquillity with a tenor surrounded by two soft traversos. Die Nacht (night) concludes with deep bass notes, carried by the dark tones of two oboes and a bassoon – an evocation of silence, shadow and mystery. In between these segments, a nocte temporis performs scenes from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s operas. He too paints the morning, noon, evening and night, but with the theatrical grandeur of the French court. The result is a vibrant musical dialogue about light, time and the human imagination – a 24-hour journey through the Baroque era in which Telemann and Rameau complement each other with surprising naturalness. Programma Georg-Philipp Telemann, Die Tageszeiten Jean-Philippe Rameau, opera excerpts Bio Tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen founded a nocte temporis in 2016. The ensemble began as a chamber music group and has since developed into a baroque orchestra. A nocte temporis received positive reviews for their CDs featuring music by, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Their album featuring music by Louis-Nicolas Clérambault has won several awards, including CHOC de Classica, Diapason d’or, Diamant d’Opéra and Le Choix de France Musique. This production seeks the answer from two visionary thinkers and artists: Hildegard von Bingen and Heinrich von Meißen, alias Frauenlob. She was a mystic, composer and, centuries later, the heroine of the New Age movement: a spiritual phenomenon avant la lettre. He was an itinerant poet and minnesinger, celebrated and imitated until long after his death. Their music unlocks a world where sound is a mystical experiment and pure imagination all rolled into one. Hildegard’s ecstatic hymns and Frauenlob’s refined minnesang are borne by the voices, lute, vielle and bagpipes of PER-SONAT: the quintessential mediaeval specialist that you simply must hear in this repertoire.

ClubMediéval - Dionysos Now!

門票: €32

Bozar Brussel (St-Jacques sur Coudenberg / St Jacob op Koudenberg)

The concert series Echoes of Brussels jumps back and forth along the capital’s timeline, focusing on memorable creations and residents. From the fifteenth century onwards, the Coudenberg Palace was a hotbed of stories, art and ambition. Almost 300 years after the fire that reduced the Burgundian court to ashes, music can once again rise from the ruins. In the sixteenth century, the building was the beating heart of Emperor Charles V’s global empire. He often resided in Brussels before his abdication in 1555. ClubMediéval performs music in the ruins of the Coudenberg that Charles himself may well have heard, while Dionysos Now! presents a broader tribute to the vibrant musical life surrounding the court in the Coudenberg Church, featuring polyphony by composers such as Johannes Ghiselin, Pedro Ruimonte and Thomas Cecquillon. Together, the two concerts paint a vivid portrait of the Coudenberg: from a modest court chapel to an international musical nexus. One ticket is valid for both concerts. There will be enough time to move between venues. When booking, please select either concert series 1 (concerts at 5.30 pm & 7 pm) or concert series 2 (concerts at 7 pm & 8.30 pm). No grandiose claims, but more than twenty sonatas for the recorder and basso continuo collected by the merchant and musician Paolo Antonio Parensi. Between 1705 and 1725, he kept a close eye on trends in Northern Italy: Corelli and Albinoni, but also Valentini, Sarri and composers we’ve hardly heard of today. Some works have not survived in any other source. Bart Coen and Mario Sarrechia open the time capsule with inquisitive ears and nimble-fingered precision. Adaptations of violin and oboe sonatas alternate with pieces written explicitly for the recorder. And in Fiocco, a Brussels native with Italian flair and French elegance, the story also gets a Belgian twist. Following previous successful editions featuring Austrian, Flemish and English Christmas music, Currende takes you to France this year. Under the title L’Amour de Noël, conductor Erik Van Nevel has put together an atmospheric programme featuring traditional Christmas carols and Baroque music by composers such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Louis Couperin, interspersed with his own arrangements. With six singers and a refined ensemble of Baroque violins, violas da gamba, organ and recorders, a unique soundscape is created in which centuries-old melodies, well-known Christmas carols, forgotten gems and fresh arrangements are brought back to life. The combination of refined vocals and period instruments – a hallmark of Currende – allows this ancient Christmas music to shine in all its simplicity and refinement. In 16th century Spain, Christmas was an explosion of popular joy! Cantoría serves up the tastiest ensaladas for the occasion: polyphonic, ‘mixed salads’ in which languages, styles and melodies are all tossed together. Mateo Flecha took the genre to an unprecedented level: his works are full of theatrical effects, political allusions and references to popular culture. Wars with the Turks, Emperors, Lucifer and Christ all whirl by in a storm of sound and rhetoric. Flashes of big hits, panting rhythms, duelling voices: what begins with appropriate primness ends in theatrical overdrive. With voices, the vihuela, viol, percussion and organ, Cantoría turns this Renaissance hit machine into an explosive Christmas party with historical swagger.

Collegium Vocale Gent & Philippe Herreweghe

門票: €51 – €61

Flagey (Studio 4)

More information soon...

Vlaams Radiokoor

門票: €31

Flagey (Studio 4)

It has been a steadfast tradition for over 25 years: in December, the Vlaams Radiokoor invites everyone to come together, pause the frantic pace of the holiday season, and find a moment of reflection through both well-known and hidden choral gems. The devout power of Anton Bruckner sets the tone immediately, opening a world of deep spiritual strength that transitions seamlessly into the bright, festive polyphony of Johannes Eccard. Their suites and sonatas are brimming with refined expression and playful energy. Fast and lively dances such as the passacaille, gigue, gavotte and courante … Musica Gloria performs them all, in a colourful ensemble featuring instruments such as the Baroque oboe, traverso, theorbo and viola da gamba. Led by Nele Vertommen and Beniamino Paganini, the ensemble brings these forgotten gems back to life with historically informed flair, warm instrumental colours and their characteristic musical vitality. It promises to be a fascinating journey through the soundscape of 18 th -century Versailles: elegant, lively and surprisingly modern in spirit. With music by Jacques Christophe Huguenet (1680-1729) and Pierre Danican Philidor (1681-1731). Bio Leuven-based Musica Gloria is a young, international, instrumental and vocal Baroque ensemble under the inspiring artistic direction of Beniamino Paganini and Nele Vertommen. They go to great lengths to connect with the audience and deliver top-quality performances. Depending on the programme and the project, Musica Gloria performs with between 2 and 40 of its members. These passionate musicians bring early music to the audience with great enthusiasm, performing it in an expressive, lively and historically informed manner on (replicas of) period instruments. Vivaldi blends brilliance with a festive spirit, much like Sollima’s Concerto perduto (“lost concerto”), in which, in 2021, he imagined a new work based on fragments of a cello concerto by the “Red Priest,” carefully preserved in Venice. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Charles Avison extend, in their own way, the virtuosity, clarity of form, and expressive freedom of the Italian Baroque, while opening the path toward the more sensitive language of the Galant style.

Performance

門票: €12

Concertgebouw Brugge (Kamermuziekzaal)

On the eve of the Bach Academy Bruges, discover the voices of tomorrow.
