Terry Wey and Ulfried Staber perform as a duo. How is that possible? Through intense concentration and advanced recording and playback techniques. Wey and Staber – with a combined vocal range of three and a half octaves – sing the forty voices separately, one after the other, recording them and then playing the recordings for each subsequent run. In this way, the complete work is created starting at 12:00 PM and then fully performed at 8:00 PM. The audience can enter and leave the church at any time – multiple visits are expressly encouraged!

A South Italian phenomenon was tarantism. Hysterical behavior believed to be caused by a bite from the tarantula. The possessed dancing of the tarantella served as the antidote. For women, this was an opportunity to lose themselves completely in public, something not easily done in a patriarchal society. In reality, the word tarantella comes from the city of Taranto in Apulia. The grandmaster of the authentic tarantella is singer and actor Pino De Vittorio, himself from Taranto. Starting from the tarantella and the related pizzica, he, along with the plucked string ensemble, embarks on an imaginary folk music journey 'from the South, towards the East', all the way to China.

Not only in title is Alexander Scriabin's Poème de l'Extase at the heart of the festival theme. That is why it appears twice in our program. On Friday evening, the original orchestral version by Philzuid, and on Saturday afternoon, a transcription for solo organ by and with the Danish virtuoso Erik Kolind. This is not only a challenge for the organist, but also for the registrants! In the 'pre-program,' two exciting Preludes & Fugues from a still young Marcel Dupré, and two parts from The Ascension by his later star pupil Olivier Messiaen.

Escape in Ecstasy celebrates the work of Hrotsvitha von Gandersheim, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Mechthild von Magdeburg, and other women from the Middle Ages and Renaissance who defied patriarchy and made their voices heard. Their courage, conviction, and resistance against a male-dominated world still resonate today. Escape in Ecstasy, composed for ensemble La Sfera Armoniosa, Claron McFadden, Channa Malkin, and Mattijs van de Woerd, is an opera in progress about the right to development for everyone.

Musical direction: Marnix De Cat When we think of ecstasy, we often associate it with a state of intense joy, but it can also be found in quiet meditation, as evidenced by the tradition surrounding Saint Cecilia, who "when the instruments sounded – namely during her wedding – sang only to God in her heart: Let, Lord, my heart and my body remain unblemished, so that I may not be ashamed.” That she would become the patron saint of all musicians some fourteen hundred years later, performing on the organ, she could never have imagined, and it was actually a misunderstanding. The sixteenth century was the first flourishing period of her cult, culminating in 1599 with the rediscovery of her supposed body, untouched beneath the church dedicated to her in the Roman district of Trastevere, and her placement under the high altar, with the famous statue by Stefano Maderno. The Pluto Ensemble presents a selection of a century of polyphonic music for Saint Cecilia, from the Netherlands to Italy. Featuring renowned names such as Nicolas Gombert, Orlandus Lassus, and Luca Marenzio, as well as long-forgotten composers like Pietro Raimondi, François Sales, Ludovicus Episcopius, and Francesco Bianciardi.

The choir is celebrating its 100th anniversary and is performing this work for the 39th time in Roermond! Even in this time, this work holds great significance for a broad audience! The story is narrated about the final days of Jesus through an immersive evangelist, contemplative arias, and impressive choirs. A dramatic story of betrayal, sacrifice, suffering, hope, and comfort, themes more relevant than ever! Toonkunstkoor Roermond performs this together with the German Baroque orchestra Concerto Vivo and international soloists, all under the direction of conductor Pieter Cox.
