‘Darkness and Light’ In the IMOCG opening concert ‘Darkness and Light’, we hear titular organist Erwin Wiersinga on the main organ of the Martinikerk. He is joined by an ensemble of professional singers in a program that explores the depths of the European choral and organ tradition. With ‘Darkness and Light’, the music moves from the dark Tenebrae and lamentations of Tomás Luis de Victoria to works full of comfort, peace, and trust by composers such as Bach, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Day 2 of the first round of the International Martini Organ Competition Groningen. The twelve participants will perform on the Schnitger organ in the Martinikerk. Admission: The tourist entry fee for the Martinikerk applies (€3). The fourth edition of the International Martini Organ Competition Groningen takes place from August 2 to August 8. The competition is held in three rounds. In the first round, all twelve participants perform on the De Mare/Hinsz organ in Appingedam (day 1) and on the Schnitger organ in the Martinikerk Groningen (day 2). After day 2, the international jury will decide which six participants move on to the semi-finals. The public is welcome at all events this week. Enjoy a charming lunch concert this summer at the monumental organ of the Martinikerk. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium present a special concert of about 45 minutes on Friday afternoons on one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The fifth concert will be given by Jaime González-Sierra. The Spanish organist began his musical training as a chorister at the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and then studied organ, basso continuo, and chamber music at the Arturo Soria Conservatoire. He continued his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Esmuc), where he specialized in organ and improvisation. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in Performing Musician at the Prins Claus Conservatorium under Erwin Wiersinga, Sietze de Vries, and Johan Hoffman. Jaime González-Sierra won second prize at the fifth edition of the Francisco Salinas National Organ Competition and has performed as a soloist at festivals and concert venues in Spain and the Netherlands. He has collaborated with ensembles such as La Caravaggia, Cor Francesc Valls, Camerata Antonio Soler, and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra. He was the organist in the crypt of the Sagrada Família and is currently active as assistant organist in both the basilica and the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel. He is also connected to the Josef Cathedral in Groningen. In addition to his musical career, he studied History at the Complutense University of Madrid. Before and after the concert, there is ample opportunity to wander through the Martinikerk and experience the unique atmosphere and rich history of this monumental building. Admission: €3. Enjoy a delightful lunchtime concert this summer at the monumental organ of the Martinikerk. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium will present a special concert of approximately 45 minutes on Friday afternoons at one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The sixth concert will be performed by Jan-Willem Jonkman. Jan-Willem Jonkman (1998) received his first organ lessons at the age of 14 from Wim Verweij at the music school in Elburg. From 2017 to 2019, he studied organ at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen with Erwin Wiersinga and Theo Jellema. After a break, he resumed his studies in 2024 and is currently studying with Sietze de Vries and Erwin Wiersinga. Additionally, he is taking basso continuo and harpsichord lessons with Johan Hofmann and piano with Nata Tsvereli. He has participated in masterclasses with among others Wolfgang Zerer and Éric Lebrun. Besides his studies, Jan-Willem is active as an organist in the Elburg and Epe region, affiliated with the Grote Kerk in Elburg (Quellhorst organ, 1825) and the Goede Herderkerk in Epe. He is also involved with Dutch Organ Tours and works in the business sector. Before the concert, the student will personally introduce the program, allowing you to discover more about the background and character of the selected works. There will be plenty of opportunities to wander through the Martinikerk before and after the concert and experience the unique atmosphere and rich history of this monumental building. Students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium will present a special concert of approximately 45 minutes on Friday afternoons, featuring one of the most impressive organs in Northern Netherlands. The concert will be provided by Márton Lénárt. Márton began his musical training at the age of six in Budapest, where he initially took piano lessons. Early on, his interest in the organ and the rich tradition of church music grew. He studied for four years at the Bartók Béla Conservatory with Balázs Szabó, where he mastered not only the classical organ repertoire but also delved into the historical, liturgical, and stylistic backgrounds of the music. Since September 2023, Márton has been studying at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, where he is taught by Erwin Wiersinga and Sietze de Vries. Within his studies, he focuses on the vast European organ repertoire, improvisation, and historical performance practice. Before the concert, Márton will give a brief personal explanation of the program and the selected works. This way, you will learn more about the background, style, and character of the music. Around 1200, Paris was a hotbed of intellectual, architectural, and musical innovation. While the cathedral, Notre-Dame, was still under scaffolding, an unprecedented musical revolution was unfolding beneath its vaults. Composers such as Leoninus and Perotinus experimented there with a daring innovation: polyphonic music, in which different voices followed their own independent paths. What caused a stir at the time marked the very beginnings of Western polyphony. This flourishing cultural context also led to a major breakthrough in musical notation: for the first time, both pitch and rhythm were accurately recorded. The works that have survived from this period still impress with their richness of sound, inventiveness, and complex structure. Shortly after his arrival in London in 1711, Georg Friedrich Handel quickly established a top position in English musical life, which is not surprising given the steady stream of masterpieces that flowed from his pen: operas, oratorios, concertos, sonatas, etc.; moreover, he was an unrivaled musician. When two voices sing their own melodies simultaneously, we speak of polyphony. In the Renaissance, it was understood that with every additional voice, the richness of the music increased – a third, a fourth, a fifth, even a sixth. But what happens when that principle is taken to the extreme? What if as many as forty different voices were to sound simultaneously in a single breathtaking piece? Around 1566, Alessandro Striggio began this experiment in Florence, commissioned by the Medici. His mass for forty voices grew into a monument: music that left listeners breathless. Striggio took the work on a tour of Europe, where it became a true sensation and inspired numerous fellow composers. Afterwards, the piece, known as the Missa sopra Ecco sì beato giorno, was lost for a long time. Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel rescue this magnificent work from oblivion, with singers and instruments. Music by contemporaries such as Orazio Benevolo, Francesco Corteccia and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina deepen the perspective on this polyphony of extremes – a sound that remains just as overwhelming five hundred years later. André Campra’s famous Messe de Requiem did not come about by chance. The work grew out of the rich musical tradition of Notre-Dame in Paris. Composers wrote music for church services there on a daily basis, thereby contributing to the splendour of the French Baroque period, known as the Grand Siècle (c. 1700). Many of Campra’s colleagues were later forgotten. But tonight, the works of Jean Veillot, Jean Mignon and Pierre Robert will once again be heard alongside Campra’s masterpiece. Together with Slachtstraat Filmtheater in Utrecht, we are presenting a special screening of Tous les matins du monde (Alain Corneau, 1991), the acclaimed French film about music, ambition, and the remarkable relationship between the viol master Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe and his pupil Marin Marais. Marais became the most celebrated composer for the viola da gamba and played a pivotal role in the instrument's development. His virtuosic and deeply expressive music remains a cornerstone of the viola da gamba repertoire. Set in seventeenth-century France, the film is renowned for its magnificent soundtrack, performed by Jordi Savall on period instruments. Even for audiences unfamiliar with early music, it offers an engaging introduction to the world of the viola da gamba and the French Baroque. Before the screening, musicologist and editor Marjolein Wellink will give a short introductory talk on behalf of Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, exploring the film's historical background, its music, and the composers featured in it.
