A concert featuring music by Handel and his main contemporaries from 18th-century London. Shortly after his arrival in London in 1711, Georg Friedrich Handel quickly established a top position in English musical life, which is not surprising given the steady stream of masterpieces that flowed from his pen: operas, oratorios, concertos, sonatas, etc.; moreover, he was an unrivaled musician. This more than forty-year-old bright star has, however, overshadowed many other fascinating figures who collaborated with or competed against him in London. Yet they too composed beautiful music. Handel's work was always the reference point, both for native composers like Avison and Pepusch, as well as for several famous foreigners who enjoyed a significant part of their careers in London: Ariosti, Porpora, Bononcini, and Fesch. The Ruckers family of Antwerp were the most celebrated harpsichord builders in the Low Countries, and their instruments set the standard across Europe for nearly two centuries. With two manuals and contrasting registers, instruments like these allowed players to switch quickly between different sounds, including the 'forte' and 'piano' effects found in some works by Bach. Maori plays a modern replica built in Amsterdam.
